For the last year and a half, television stations across the US have been turning to Covering Climate Now to learn how to make the connection between extreme weather and climate change.
Last November, David Urías, a general assignment and multimedia reporter at Univision Dallas, used those skills in a new way in his reporting. When unprecedented mountain hurricanes hit the southeastern US back to back, Urías moved quickly to produce a short documentary and two news segments on Hurricanes Helene and Milton and their effects.
Although Urías had previously covered several climate-related disasters, it wasn’t until he trained with CCNow’s program The Climate Station that he learned how to make the explicit connection between those events and climate change. “I’ve been reporting on this story for half of my career, and I had no idea,” he said in the report.
Once he finished working on the scripts for the pieces, he sent them to CCNow staffers Elena González and Santiago Sáez for review. “Thank you so much,” Urías said. “I knew I had to take the script to you.”
