Our mission is to transform how the media covers climate change

Covering Climate Now is a global journalism collaboration with over 500 news outlet partners around the world committed to improving coverage of climate change. We support, convene, and train journalists and newsrooms to produce more and better coverage of the defining story of our time. Because an informed, engaged public is essential to defusing the climate emergency, we encourage reporting on climate change — and its solutions — throughout the newsroom.

Telling the Story of Climate Journalism

Climate journalism has come a long way since our founding in 2019. Now, climate is often its own beat. News outlets have climate reporters or entire climate and environment desks. You’ll see climate as a major vertical on an outlet’s webpage. But much more needs to be done, especially as climate change continues to be politicized as a divisive issue. And it’s not. Between 80 and 89% of the world’s people want their governments to be doing more to address climate change.

Most news outlets still aren’t matching the scale of their resources with the scale of the unfolding climate crisis. Better news coverage is an essential climate solution. It’s a catalyst that makes progress on every part of the climate crisis — from politics to business, activism to justice, lifestyle change to systems change — more likely. Better mainstream news coverage reaches beyond the choir. It can educate massive numbers of people about what’s going on and how to fix it — and inspire them to act.

We unite a collaboration of more than 500 news outlet partners from 60 countries around the world. Our partnership — the largest of its kind in the world — includes outlets big and small. All of us are striving to improve the caliber and prominence of climate coverage.

Though we primarily serve journalists and news outlets, about 30% of our network is made up of climate-conscious people who work in various fields, including educators, policy experts, analysts, and psychologists. We are glad to be situated in a community of institutions and individuals who are actively seeking climate information, know the value of journalism, and actively support it.

Newsletters

In 2024, we launched two newsletters: Climate on the Ballot encouraged and advised reporters about how to include climate change in their elections coverage, and Locally Sourced localized the climate story by providing story ideas and examples, resources, and reporting tips from journalists on the beat. Our suite of newsletters provided a regular tempo of ideas and resources to inspire fresh angles and engaging coverage.

Climate Blueprint

We collaborated on the “Climate Blueprint for Media Transformation,” a 14-part guide for covering climate change that captures professional priorities, success stories, and critical advice from which all journalists interested in elevating climate-focused journalism can draw inspiration.

Elections

With so many climate-critical countries holding elections in 2024 — India, Pakistan, Indonesia, South Africa, Egypt, Mexico, the US, the EU, the UK, and more — elections were a major editorial priority for the year. We held a virtual summit for journalists in September featuring Chase Cain of NBC News and Joan Meiners of The Arizona Republic, who interviewed John Podesta, senior climate advisor to President Joe Biden. CCNow’s fiscal sponsor is the Washington, D.C.–based 501c3 The Fund for Constitutional Government. We have been supported by generous grants from numerous foundations and individual philanthropists.

In the fourth quarter of the year, CCNow secured $750,000 in funding from a range of donors.

Ginny Michaux, a long-time supporter of Covering Climate Now and a climate champion of her own, passed away in early 2024. Covering Climate Now was honored to be named in her obituary, as an organization to support with a contribution, in lieu of sending flowers. The donations in memoriam exceeded $10,000, a generous demonstration of Ginny’s incredible life, and her commitment to climate issues.

Following that, CCNow began welcoming individual donations, raising tens of thousands of dollars in a sign of broad public support for our work.
